Acts of kindness

I saw this article online at the Guardian. Can we come up with a list for here in Guyana?

The article lists acts of kindness which can be done (in the UK) to show kindness to another.

To quote the article:

"But what all these acts have in common is that they will make you feel good: research shows that being kind make us happier. So you can help others and feel better yourself all at once."

Examples that work anywhere:

Be polite, cheerful and friendly.

Give blood.

Being kind to animals.

COVID19 in Guyana - February 2022

Well it seems that the wave is over. Cases are back down well under 100. The curfew is lifted. I hope people continue wearing masks as the pandemic is not over yet!

Surinam is still following a similar trajectory.

COVID19 in Guyana - January 2022

So things are rather different now. It seems that Omicron hit us late last month and cases have spiked to over 1000 per day.

For the past week or so reported cases have fluctuated around 1000 plus or minus a few hundred. I would suspect that our ability to run tests is being stretched and cases are actually more.

The good news is that the ICU has around 15 cases - half of what it was last year. Presumably due to this variant being less severe. Hopefully cases will fall quickly soon.

Hospitals are being stretched due to staff shortages caused by sickness. A common situation in many countries.

It is interesting to note that cases in Surinam and French Guiana both spiked the same time as Guyana.

Vaccinate to keep others safe - new research

A report from Imperial College London says:

"New research has found that double vaccinated people were three times less likely than unvaccinated people to test positive for the corona-virus."

And other recent research finds that:

"Fully vaccinated people who catch COVID-19 appear to be less infectious and clear the virus quicker than unvaccinated people, early research suggests."

So to put it simply vaccinated people are much less likely to get infected by COVID and, if they do catch it, they are less likely to spread it to others.

Even more reason to get vaccinated.

COVID19 in Guyana - August 2021

Our case numbers are rising with an average over 100. The ICU numbers have exceeded 30. Possibly complacency and the delta variant combined to cause another wave. Due to mainly ill-advised vaccine hesitancy about half the adult population remain unvaccinated.

Windows needs a grandfather mode

I have an elderly friend who is a daily user of the internet. Currently he uses a Windows 10 laptop.

However he has memory problems and his eyesight is imperfect. He finds the experience with Windows very frustrating at times.

His problems I would try to summarise as follows:

- unwanted and unexpected changes in the user interface

- complicated login procedure with PIN, passwords etc

- unresponsive computer due to updates being processed

- text being too small including that of error messages

- too many unwanted features

- on booting up the computer appears ready but is not

He finds it very confusing when unexpected things happen. He needs things too be simple, straight forward and the interface to stay the same from year to year.

COVID19 in Guyana - July 2021

Nothing much new to report. Things continue as last month. I shall discontinue these updates unless there is real news. Case numbers seem to be dropping very slowly.

COVID19 in Guyana - June 2021

Not much seems to have changed since May except that the vaccine role-out has continued. The case numbers continue at about the same level. ICU cases have declined slightly.

The vaccines acquired recently have been Sputnik. This has been a bit controversial but I will not attempt to get into that here.

COVID19 in Guyana - May 2021

Our daily new cases may have leveled off but at a relatively high level (100+). The number in ICU has reached 22.

Not alot seems to have changed otherwise regarding behaviour. Minibuses are reportedly carrying a nearly full load of passengers again.

The main news is that vaccine role-out has continued with persons 18 years and older being vaccinated (about 245,000 first dose total).

COVID19 in Guyana - April 2021

Our daily new cases may have peaked (see graph). This is definitely the most serious wave so far. The number in ICU has reached over 15.

Not alot seems to have changed otherwise regarding behaviour. There are some reports of people being charged for attending parties. However minibuses are reportedly carrying a full load of passengers again.

The main news is that vaccine role-out has gathered momentum with persons of any age being vaccinated (about 100,000 total).

COVID19 in Guyana - March 2021

Our daily new cases has been trending upward. The number in ICU is back up to 10 or so.

Not much seems to have changed otherwise regarding behaviour.

The main news is that vaccine role-out has gathered momentum since March 15. Health workers and many over 60 persons being vaccinated (about 20,000). My wife and myself got our vaccination on Monday. No serious side effects.

COVID19 in Guyana - February 2021

Our daily new cases has continued at about the same level. The number in ICU is not high. New variants are suspected but not confirmed so far as I know.

Several thousand doses of vaccine were received and given to health workers. Some had a mild fever for a day but that is a small price to pay for protection. Am ready and waiting for my vaccine... 😀

Not much seems to have changed otherwise.

COVID19 in Guyana - January 2021

Our daily new cases has surged again to levels a little below that of the first wave, so far. The number in ICU is not high. New variants are suspected but not confirmed.

Not much seems to have changed otherwise. Mask wearing has become a fact of life in the city.

Our neighbour, Surinam, also has a surge.

COVID19 in Guyana - December

Our daily new cases has fallen to single digits despite hundreds of tests so that is good news. The number in ICU is also low. Not much else has changed that I am aware of.

Waiting to see if Christmas activities cause a spike!

COVID19 in Guyana - November

No major changes since last month. I guess that is a good thing. Deaths now approach 150 but the ICU is about half full (about 8). Daily cases reported are in the usual range.

There are positive reports that private labs are increasingly able to test for the virus - at a cost. It is also reported that the new hospital at Ocean View is being put into use for pandemic patients.

COVID19 in Guyana - October

Our situation seems much the same however the deaths are now well over 100.

Graphs of cases seem to suggest that we are over the peak but this just may be an artifact of how testing is being done. There was a surge last month when a prison was infected.

Time will tell.

Our testing capacity is being greatly improved which is very good news. Likewise with our ICU capacity.

COVID19 in Guyana - September

The pandemic continues to accelerate with cases around 3000 and 50-100+ new cases per day. The increase still seems exponential.

There does not seem to be any great alarm in the general population only concern. Mask wearing is still only partial especially out of town.

Schools are still mostly closed. Some workers are being encouraged to return to work.

COVID19 in Guyana - August

What has changed in the last month?

The pandemic is accelerating and has surged past 1000. Infected persons are still entering the country along the southern and western borders.

On the positive side local stores (East Coast) are becoming more observant with staff wearing masks but many customers do not.

So far no close friends in Guyana or neighbours have been affected.

COVID19 in Guyana - July

We continue to come slowly out of lockdown but case numbers are increasing and approach 400.
On the coast things seem to be mostly unchanged. There seems to be considerable concern over infected persons crossing the border from our neighbours.

COVID19 in Guyana - late June

The first phase of reopening is due to end in a few days. Not much seems to have changed since one month ago. Local supermarkets do not appear to be insisting on a mask though they may have a notice up requesting it. Cases numbers continue to slowly increase.

I have now resumed going for an occasional short walk for exercise which is much needed!
